Which stick should I choose?
There are four things you should consider when you pick your floorball stick.
Those are: • Length • Flex • Blade • Hook
• Length
It’s important to get the correct length on the stick. Because if you pick one that’s too long, it will be harder to control the ball as you get too far away from the ball. If you get a stick that is too short for you, your back won’t like it, as you will play with the back unnaturally bent.
How to measure the correct length?
The length measure if a stick doesn't include the blade. So add about 15 cm to get the total length of the stick.
• With a Floorball stick: place the stick in front of you in a straight line to the floor. The stick should reach up to one fist height above the belly button.
• With a tape measurer: measure (in cm) from the floor to one fist height above the belly button. Then subtract 15 cm of the value you got, to account for the blade being not included in the stick length.
• Flex
The lower the flex number is, the stiffer the shaft will be. A high flex makes it bend easier.* The flex of a stick usually range between 23-35. A low flex (a harder stick) is better for stronger players. When choosing flex you consider that the more you weigh and the harder your shot is, the stiffer the shaft of your stick should be. While a stiffer flex is great for shots, a softer shaft is better for stick handling.
* The flex of a shaft is measured by laying the stick on two points 80 cm apart and in the middle putting a weight. Then measure how much it bends. That is then the flex value in mm. So the more it bends, the higher the flex value will be.
• Blade
Blades also comes in different stiffness. The same rule as in shaft flex applies to blades as well. A hard blade gives a hard shoot and a soft one gives a better feeling for the ball. There is blades in many different shapes and that’s more up to your liking which you choose. But most blades come pre curved for better ball control, that is called a blades hook.
• Hook
The hook determines which side of the blade is pre curved. If you hold the stick on the left side of your body, with the left hand furthest down on the shaft, your hook should be left. If the stick is on your right side when you shoot, your hook should be right.
